Introduction

Barmer is a city and a municipality in Barmer district in the state of Rajasthan, India. Barmer is part of the Great Indian Desert or Thar Desert. The name Barmer is derived from the ruler Bahada Rao or Bar Rao who is said to have founded the town in the 13th century, when it was named Bahadamer (“The Hill Fort of Bahada”).Barmer is the abode of certain flora and fauna that are particularly endemic to arid regions and are specially adapted biologically to survive in the dry, waterless regions of the state.The rich tradition of arts and handicraft making has been kept alive by the people of Barmer. The artisans of the city are famous for creating beautiful carved wooden items, excellent pots and vases, exquisite and embroidered carpets and rugs and dyed and hand printed textiles of vivid colors.
